Sparky Brushless Gimbal Controller

by peabody124 » Thu Aug 28, 2014 2:46 am

I updated Sparky BGC to a more standard layout (daughter board for sensors). First flight today was pretty successful.

It's nice because you adjust and tune it through the standard GCS. With the CAN interface it will also work for doing POI tracking like I did previously with Oso:

We set it up on OsoGrande's quad today:

I've also updated the CAN code so it sends data much more quickly. This means we can send the flight controller attitude to the gimbal and do things like account for gimbal lock (where the roll angle becomes pitch). More fun to come!

This uses the CAN communication

from the gimbal to sparky to tell the gimbal the attitude of the frame. This way, the gimbal can enter a locked mode at certain angles that the frame cannot tolerate and handle flips.

OsoGrande wanted this so hopefully we'll see some demos ;-)

Hi Peabody, is there a way to let the BGC know that the IMU is mounted inverted on the gimbal?

Yeah. Connect USB to the BGC control board, then in the attitude page set roll to 180.

Thanks Peabody, worked through that and the other settings on the BGC. It goes through the initial initialisation, centre, tilt forward slightly, back slightly, left and right slightly, then it seems to go in to a fit of rage and just starts pitching and rolling violently.

It sounds like your wiring might be wrong. The order should be roll right, roll left, pitch up, pitch down (according to code, I'm not with gimbal right now).

Once that is correct, please confirm when you plug it into the GCS (no need to power gimbal) that the attitude responds appropriately as you tilt the gimbal.
