Audio with FPV

by peabody124 » Mon Oct 05, 2015 10:27 pm

So I've started on using the DAC output for Sparky/BrushedSparky/TauOSD to send information back to the ground. One idea is true telemetry like a modem, but I'm deferring that and will start with basic tones that humans can understand. E.g. beeps that have a pitch and rate they occur (although suggestions are welcome).

Things we could encode this way: RSSI, battery voltage, variometer

Other ideas?

I assume these would be "'alarms" that will beep in our goggled and headphoned heads when some pre-configured low limit is hit. GPS sats falling below 7 would be good to know too.

Here is a test run with this kind of feedback:

Some top racing pilots listen to the mic that's Built into some cameras or VTX.

That's Mr. Steele, but He's not the only one. The latency of sound through air is pretty large, so even if you're flying in a small area, RF audio still adds up to be useful for hearing the motors responses.

Isn't the best long term solution, 433 for control and telemetry?

Generally I like 433 for control + telem and taranis gives audio notification. This is just another option to have a lightweight way of hearing things like RSSI without an OSD.

You could still do this with one audio channel and use the other for microphone audio right?

I've never seen a vtx that is stereo, nor a vrx. NTSC allows for stereo, but we are using security cam hardware.

Depending on the output impedances you could use a few resistors to mix (preamped) mic out and cpu out, or pad the cpu out and parallel it into the mic.

Actually the VTX on BrushedSparky and TauOSD is 2 channel although I haven't tested how well it does that. I wired them together on BS.

The ImmersionRC, Hawkeye etc. are all stereo too. People have shared the two channels like this with antenna trackers and audio before.
