FrSKY SmartPort telemetry

by dandys » Fri Aug 15, 2014 11:28 am

Hi,
FrSky SmartPort telemetry was just merged into next. It's useful when you have some newer FrSky receiver and Taranis. I'am creating this topic and looking forward for your comments and practical experience with it.

Please read wiki page before trying out: https://github.com/TauLabs/TauLabs/wiki/User-Guide:-FrSKY-S.PORT-telemetry

There is also demonstration video: https://vimeo.com/99997249 (please mute sound when you are annoyed like I am by my terrible english, lol)

Really nice work! I think that will make a lot of people using Taranis system's happy when they start using it. Makes me want to get one!

Thank you!

You are saying that Sparky does not need the inverter, but Quanton and Revo do?

Exactly. Sparky is based on STM32F3 which has USART equipped by configurable inverter. STM32F4 USARTs doesn't have such feature and therefore external circuit is required.

Hi,

I've just read the wiki page and the "more sensors on one s.port" section.
I'm just wondering, I'm about the buy some FrSky lipo sensors with smartport (FLVSS).
Would the hardware (quanton in my case) be able to read from the smartport ?
If so I guess there's a point in connecting more sensors to the bus.
The fc would read the bus, it would use the telemetry provided by real sensors, and then decide not to send the telemetry fields that are already provided by real sensors.

does that make any sense ? :)

Hi Laurent,
no, such setup is not possible with current code. Module is just unidirectional - it provides telemetry data from FC sensors to FrSky receiver and not vice versa.

Edit: Sorry, I skipped your last sentence, now it makes sense to me :) Answer is the same though. It's not programmed. But it's actually really good suggestion! It also shouldn't be too hard to implement it. But I don't have any frsky sensor for experimenting - that's the reason I programmed this in the first place :D .

ok, thanks for your answer.
I'm yet to try my quanton but I'll order some nonetheless.
that would give me good reasons to look into taulabs code :-)

What you posted is RS232<->TTL converter. SmartPort is different - it's inverted 3.3V bidirectional half-duplex UART multiplexed on one wire and therefore special circuit is required, I don't think you can buy ready module somewhere :/

That's what I have feared. Since I don't have the parts at hand I went the Mavlink/Teensy route to get telemetry to Smartport. But thanks for your help, anyway.
