Put a 2211 with 5x3 prop on the tail to see how it looked. Looks like a lot of motor on there LOL. They mount fine on the tail and work with a shim on the front. Going to see how a 1510 fits (18mm OD) and decide on one or the other. I like the fact the 1510 will be shrouded by the arm plate but the 2211 has more power.

The 1510 motors fit the mini vtail frame perfect so I hope they have enough thrust. Seem to handle 3s ok. Now to figure out where to mount those big 12A afro esc LOL. The motor/esc combo runs well with no sync issues so happy about that.

Here is the mini hunter vtail all wired up with a sparky on board. I figured I would start with an easy to repeat motor layout so I set them up so looking down on the frame the back right was ccw and all the others would follow. All motor/props direction was tested with direct rx output again so repeatable. Using one of Mat's last vtail mixer tables I gave it a test try to find the mixer wasn't right for my layout so I will have to do some more testing before maiden flight (where it will actual fly).

edit: Doh! I'm such a noob sometimes. Board was mounted 90 degrees off. Any way here is the mix I am flying at the moment.

Completed mini vtail and mix that played nice with autotune. Like it and may have to build a bigger version in the future.

Hey, I'm working on a similar vtail just now and having issues with the mixing..

viewtopic.php?f=12&t=511&start=10

I was wondering how you worked out your mixer, do you have a guide?

I also wondered where your centre of gravity is on this...

Thanks

Thomas no guide. I did what all do and copied the mixer from someone else LOL. Mat Wellington deserves the credit. He is called the "Mix Master" :D

This mix has more of a tricopter feel to it with aggressive yaw. To start the explanation it is good you asked about COG because it is 1/3 forward of center. That means the front motors need to have more power than the back. The throttle mix gives front motors full power while backing off the tail motors so when coming off ground in rate mode it jumps straight up off ground. You can adjust tail motors power to get a straight lift off then you are good. Roll originally just used power on the front motors but there was a slight dip of the tail when rolling and it seemed to confuse autotune so about 20% power was put on the tail to make autotune happy. With pitch you would think that less thrust on the tail would mean that the tail would have a higher percentage of power in the mix but again the battery weight is forward of center so leaving equal power front to back balances it out for pitch. Yaw originally used just power on the tail motors to power the tail around giving true tricopter feel to it. Again there was a slight slippage sideways so power was put to the front motors in yaw as well. The main thing is to set your vtail down and look down on the back right tail motor. When thrusting downwards does the thrust push the tail around to the left? If it does the direction of rotation for that motor should be CCW. The CCW prop rotation aids in pushing the tail around to the left. Starting with getting the back right motor setup correctly all the others follow suit or in other words diagonally opposite motors have same rotation. I really didn't think the quad x mix felt right on this type of bird but that is just me...

What is left of my trusty 450 Sporter quad after crash today. Hopefully it will not be a Humpty Dumpty and will fly smoothly again when arms are replaced.

update: 450 Sporter is in the air flying smoothly again. It appears operator was once again at fault

The mini hunter vtail is a lot more fun to fly with the 2211 2300kv motors on it. Same stator as 1806 motor but in pedestal form. It is able to run 6x3 props in the front and 5x4 props in the rear. Now if I can just convince DiaLFonZo to cut some arms that will take a 1806-2300 can motor directly since some of them have a 3mm shaft. One if not the most fun to fly I have ever built. My first mini vtail a couple of years ago didn't fly anywhere near as nice as this one. Must have something to do with the flightware ;)

Glad you ended working out the mixer settings ! I'll take a closer look, we might use those to extend the GCS standard settings to include a Quad VTail :)

Apart from looking incredibly cool, what's the big advantage of a V-Tail, may I ask ?

Easy orientation is the biggest benefit. Haven't come out of a move yet that you couldn't easily tell which way it was pointed. If the first one I built a couple years ago had flown this well I would have been using them all along. The tricopter flight characteristic coupled with the easy orientation make for a great fun flier. Seems much easier to fly nose in as well. The downside is it does have slightly less lift (shorter flight time) and you may would have to adjust the mixer settings if you change motor/prop or battery. When I switched to larger motors, props and battery on the DiaLFonZo mini vtail I had to bump the tail motors power up again for roll. For that reason I am unsure about default settings. Perhaps when I get the 500mm vtail built I will have a better feel for it...
