Gunfighter and Friends

by pug398 » Sun Mar 30, 2014 1:07 am

Not really a new build but one that is ever changing :) Topper is over a year old and has always had battery packs slung on both legs hence the name Gunfighter. With the quanton as fc it has always flown very solid in manual and atti modes in fact the best I have personally flown. After finding that my autonomous flight problems were most likely due to mag interference I had to increase the height of the board stack. With the quanton board 50mm from the power distro board it is flying now like it should in PH. In flying with the camera turned down I found the shots were catching the landing gear in view and the easiest thing to do was to shorten the legs so I cut him off at the ankles a few months ago. The closest gear to the same height would be Jakub's 155mm legs from quadframe.com. I have used motor dampers for about 3 years and am happy with their performance but it does not replace having to properly balance the drives.

I dont think my radio works as well as yours and i think i read somewhere that hobbyking was sent 2.4ghz antennas with it instead of properly 433mhz but i dont if they will even work with that kind on change.

what do you mean by balanced drives? :)

It would depend on what wavelength the antenna were cut for but slim chance they would be correct. Receiving isn't as big a problem as transmission. After I thought about it just because 3DRobotics.com is silkscreened on my radios doesn't mean 3DR produced them. That would be in the cad file so anybody could make them.

Balanced drive means prop, prop adapter and motor all balanced and running smooth. Anyone of them not balanced can produce "jello" effect in video. I try to get everything balanced plus use vibration dampers on motors and gimbal assembly. The higher the motor above the damper the more effect the damper has so that is why you see them setting up in the air a bit. If you get the all the drives perfectly balanced then you can bolt the motor right to the boom and have perfect video. It does usually take a good quality motor though.

Measure the "stick" part of your antenna and if it is ~100-120mm long then it is probably 433mhz

Looks great. I'd not seen motor dampers like that before. I can see their benefit. Have you decided on a motor/prop combo for the 700mm version?

Have been testing several different drives but right now it looks like T-motor 3110 470kv @ 6s with 13" CF props (only needs ~620mm). The original plan was using them with 18" CF props on 3s. Power and temps were acceptable but the mass of the props gave me some acceleration/deceleration concerns with the small motor. The 13" on 6s solved that problem but lost large part of estimated flight time. Still going to give the 18" setup a real world test but expect the flight performance to be poor. The 2814 is what I use the most of but trying to match performance of one of the commercial offerings with this one :)

I've been playing with some 16 and 17" props with 390kv motors on 4s and having pretty good results.

Turnigy Talon 550 Quad Carbon Fiber Frame
Turnigy Talon V2 Carbon Fiber Extended Boom 320mm
Turnigy Multistar 4225-390Kv
17x5.5" Carbon Fiber CW CCW Propellers

I've gotten 24min on 5ah 4s and haven't gotten around to putting more on it yet.

Its an ugly build that needs to be cleaned up but you know how getting around to that goes.....
That and switching it over to Tau, now that PH and RTH are up and going.

That is pretty respectable flight time on single battery. The 620mm with 2814-900kv gets about 20 min.

Gunfighter is a great name for it, that quad has a lot of personality.

Newest build and I am having a lot of fun with it. A 450 Sporter frame that I try out new releases and hardware on just in case there is a problem. I won't cry quite as hard if this one bites the dust rather than if it was my bigger camera ship.

450mm AL/CF frame
SS2212 980kv motors
DYS30A esc w/sk
10x4.5 props
6000ma 25C 3s battery
Frsky D8R-XP
Quanton
3DR GPS (inside aftermarket case)
Xbee telemetry radio
Mobius cam

Starting build of 285mm Hunter V-tail. Was disappointed to find none of my sets of 1806 motors will fit the motor opening in the top plate but that is just my luck. Looks like opening is 20mm and 1806 runs just over 22mm OD. Perhaps some 2211-2300 pedestal motors. Decisions, decisions...
